How should one renormalize the potential of a long range Gibbs point process?
I will discuss how to define the potential generated by an infinite set of points thrown at random, when the interaction is non-integrable at infinity. I will consider several natural renormalization schemes and give conditions ensuring they coincide. The Coulomb case is special, which has caused a lot of confusion in the Physics literature, even in the simplest case of periodic lattices.
