Fun with Fredholm determinants

Abstract 
Throughout my career, I have found Fredholm determinants to be a very powerful tool in the study of spectral theory and integrable systems. I would like to begin by explaining what they are and how I have used them, before pivoting to a recent nasty surprise and how forthcoming joint work with Yilun Wu and Monica Visan has restored my faith in Fredholm determinants.
